Alentejo unveils 390g regional bottle, targeting 50 million units a year
Wines of Alentejo and Verallia unveil a 390g bottle, Portugal's first regional collective lightweight format, with 50 million units a year targeted from end-2027.

Wines of Alentejo (CVRA) has unveiled a 390-gram lightweight wine bottle, with bottling and stress tests running until the end of Q1 2027 and market launch planned for the end of 2027. Production is projected at 50 million bottles a year once the format reaches the market.
Developed with glass manufacturer Verallia, the Alentejo Lightweight Bottle is the first collective lightweight bottle created by a Portuguese wine region. The project took four years to complete. Each producer can adopt it freely, at what CVRA described as "an attractive and competitive price".
For bottlers and logistics managers, the design detail that matters most is compatibility. The bottle works with existing bottling lines and logistics set-ups, so adoption carries no capital retooling requirement. That removes the usual barrier to lightweighting at scale.
What changes for producers' cost base?
The weight cut reduces raw material use, energy consumption and emissions. It also lowers two recurring line items on a Portuguese producer's ledger: transport costs and recycling fees paid under Portugal's Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme. EPR fees are typically levied by weight and material volume, so a lighter standard bottle across a whole region compounds the saving.
CVRA is presenting the bottle now, ahead of the test phase closing, so that producers, importers and retailers can plan implementation from the start of the 2027-2028 cycle.
Luís Sequeira, president of CVRA, said: "Sustainability is a strategic commitment for Wines of Alentejo, reflected in a pioneering approach to reducing the environmental impact of the entire value chain, from vine to glass."
He added: "More than simply a new bottle, the Alentejo Lightweight Bottle is the visible expression of a region that preserves the quality and identity of its wines whilst building a more sustainable future."
How deep is the region's sustainability track record?
The bottle builds on the Wines of Alentejo Sustainability Programme (WASP), launched in 2015 and still the only such initiative created by a Portuguese wine region. The numbers behind it:
- 727 member businesses
- 30 certified producers
- Coverage of 25% of Alentejo's vineyard area and 36% of its wine production
- Certified members report up to 30% lower water use and 20% lower energy consumption over the past five years
João Barroso, sustainability coordinator of WASP, said: "Eleven years after launching one of Europe's pioneering regional wine sustainability programmes, Alentejo continues to transform ambition into action." He added: "The new 390-gram bottle proves that meaningful innovation does not always require radical change."
To put the weight in context: at 390g, the bottle sits well below the roughly 500-550g typical of standard still-wine glass, a reduction of around a fifth per unit multiplied across 50 million units a year.
What happens next?
Bottling and stress tests continue until the end of Q1 2027, after which CVRA will confirm the production model. WASP, a founding partner of Sustainability in Drinks (SID), will pour wines from the producers behind the bottle at its stand in the Packaging Zone on 20 October. Producers, importers and retailers now have an 18-month planning window before the end-2027 market launch, and uptake among the region's 727 WASP members will determine how quickly the format becomes the de facto regional standard.
