Coterie Holdings to Acquire Berry Bros. & Rudd's Japan Wholesale Arm
Coterie Holdings will take over BBR's Japanese wholesale arm via The Wine Experience, while BBR keeps its private client business in Japan, active there since 2008.

Coterie Holdings has agreed to acquire Berry Bros. & Rudd's Japanese wholesale business, transferring the operation and the majority of its producer agencies to The Wine Experience, the fine wine importer it owns.
The deal marks a significant consolidation play in Asian fine wine distribution for Coterie, the group led by CEO Michael Saunders. It also draws a clear line under BBR's sixteen-year Japanese wholesale presence, which dates to 2008, while leaving the merchant's private client business in the market untouched.
What does the deal cover?
According to Coterie: "Under the agreement, Berry Bros. & Rudd's wholesale activities in Japan will transfer to The Wine Experience, a specialist fine wine importer owned by Coterie Holdings, along with the majority of the producers currently represented by BBR Japan."
The scope is precise:
- Wholesale activities in Japan move to The Wine Experience.
- Most producer agencies represented by BBR Japan transfer with them.
- BBR's private client business in Japan stays with the merchant and continues operating as it has since 2008.
For suppliers, the practical question is agency continuity. Producers moving to Coterie's importer gain a parent with stated ambitions across distribution, merchanting and support services in multiple markets. Those not transferring face an uncertain handover path.
Why is BBR selling?
BBR chair Lizzy Rudd framed the sale as a refocusing of the merchant's Asian strategy toward higher-margin private client work rather than an exit from the region.
"Japan remains an important market for Berry Bros. & Rudd, and we are committed to building on our longstanding presence there. This planned sale will allow us to focus more closely on our private client service in Japan and across Asia, including Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. We are working closely with Coterie Holdings to ensure a smooth transition," Rudd said.
The geography matters. BBR keeps private client operations in four Asian markets: Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. It sheds the wholesale infrastructure and the working-capital demands that come with it.
What changes for Coterie?
Saunders has previously set out his ambition to build a multi-market business spanning distribution, merchanting and support services. Japan gives that strategy a stronger foothold in one of Asia's key economies, achieved through consolidation rather than organic build-out — a faster route to new customers in the region.
"We are delighted to welcome BBR Wholesale Japan customers to the Coterie Holdings Group. Our immediate priority is to ensure a seamless transition for all customers from BBR Wholesale Japan. We look forward to serving and working with our new customers in the future," Saunders said.
The customer-facing message is continuity. The commercial logic is scale: adding an established wholesale book and established producer agencies to an importer already specialising in fine wine.
What happens next?
The transaction is described as planned, not completed. Transition work between BBR and Coterie Holdings is under way, with both parties focused on moving BBR Wholesale Japan customers across without disruption. Further detail on completion timing, transferring producer lists and any staffing changes should emerge as the handover progresses.
