Hand Picked Hotels has acquired four Cotswolds properties from Andrew Brownsword Hotels in a single package, adding 118 bedrooms and lifting the boutique operator's UK estate to 21 individual hotels spread across the mainland and the Channel Islands.
The four acquired properties are:
- Buckland Manor
- The Slaughters Country Inn
- The Slaughters Manor House
- Old Swan & Minster Mill
All four will continue to trade under their existing names, with no immediate changes to the guest offering. Each property runs an established food and beverage operation under an on-site restaurant.
Julia Hands, chair of Hand Picked Hotels, framed the deal in terms of guest fit. "These hotels are a natural fit, combining the heritage, individuality and quality that our guests value and expect," she said. "Their addition complements our existing portfolio while introducing Hand Picked Hotels to new audiences across the UK and internationally."
What does the deal change for both groups?
For Hand Picked, the acquisition lands alongside a leadership reset. Andrew Stembridge takes the CEO role at the group's Luxury division, joining after 22 years with Iconic Hotels & Resorts.
The combination of added inventory and senior recruitment supports the next phase of portfolio growth the group has signalled.
For Brownsword Hotels, the disposal is a deliberate scale-down. The seller retains landmark properties and continues to grow its ABode brand, signalling a sharper focus on its conversion-led model.
The Cotswolds covers rolling countryside marked by characteristic yellow-limestone villages. Its leisure profile has risen in recent years through media coverage of rural businesses, including farming-focused programming featuring Jeremy Clarkson.
Which other Cotswolds projects are reshaping supply?
Three schemes are worth tracking for operators positioning around regional demand:
- Belmond Hotels is remodelling Manoir aux Quat'Saisons in the Oxfordshire countryside, adding further rooms with completion scheduled for autumn 2027. The property retains a long-established fine-dining reputation under chef Raymond Blanc.
- Cabu in the Cotswolds, a luxury resort near Leafield, is repurposing a former Marconi radio transmission site. The plan covers 51 eco-lodges spread across the woodland, plus central facilities including spa, pools, restaurant and event space. Opening is scheduled for 2027.
- Staycity has signed to bring its Wilde aparthotel brand to Oxford on a 145-unit development that will convert a former cinema in the city centre. The property is expected to open in 2029.
How is Oxford's pipeline shaping up?
Tight planning rules limit new-build hotel supply in Oxford. Two active schemes define the near-term picture.
The 36-room Linton Lodge is planning a refurbishment and extension that will see it join the BW Signature Collection on completion.
The Staycity Wilde project adds extended-stay density through conversion rather than new construction, making it one of the few active hotel schemes inside the city centre.
What happens next?
The four Brownsword properties will continue operating under existing branding through a transition period. Cabu in the Cotswolds targets a 2027 opening, the Belmond Manoir aux Quat'Saisons extension completes in autumn 2027, and Staycity's Oxford Wilde aparthotel is expected to open in 2029. Under Andrew Stembridge, Hand Picked will set out its next portfolio moves as the Luxury division completes its onboarding.
