Meliá Hotels International has signed an agreement with Gruppo Stay to open its first The Meliá Collection hotel in Rome, marking the debut of the Spanish operator's upper-upscale brand in the Italian capital.

The deal pairs one of Europe's largest hotel groups with an Italian partner that will hold the property-side responsibility for the new opening. For Meliá, the agreement extends The Meliá Collection — the company's portfolio of individually characterised, non-standardised luxury hotels — into one of Southern Europe's most supply-constrained and high-rate urban markets.

Rome has been one of the strongest performing city markets in Europe over recent cycles, with sustained international leisure demand, a recovering meetings segment and limited new-build pipeline. Luxury and upper-upscale inventory in the historic centre remains scarce, which supports rate growth for operators able to secure well-located assets. The Meliá Collection's model — conversion of distinctive existing properties rather than branded new construction — fits that dynamic, allowing entry without ground-up development risk.

For Meliá, the signing continues the group's long-running strategy of growth through partnerships with local owners across the Mediterranean. Italy in particular has been a focus market for the Palma de Mallorca-based operator, and adding Rome to The Meliá Collection's map strengthens the brand's presence in the region's premier gateway cities.

For Gruppo Stay, the agreement provides access to Meliá's distribution, loyalty infrastructure and international client base, a common motivation for Italian property groups partnering with global operators rather than running independent formats.

The name of the property, its location within Rome and the opening timeline have not yet been disclosed. Operators and investors tracking the Roman luxury segment will be watching for those details, which will determine how the hotel positions itself against the city's established upper-upscale supply.
