UK wine importer Hatch Mansfield has appointed Jon Pepper MW as its new CEO, with the Master of Wine stepping into the role next month. Founder Patrick McGrath MW, the long-time chief executive, transitions to chairman as part of the move.
Pepper joins after six years as CEO of Tenute del Mondo Wine Group, the luxury wine and spirits division of Stoli Group. Before that he spent five years at Enotria, where he also rose to CEO, and nine years at Buckingham Schenk, including four as managing director.
Why is the leadership changing now?
The appointment completes a restructuring Hatch Mansfield announced earlier this year, as first reported by Harpers. The company decided to combine the roles of MD and CEO, and then-managing director Ben Knollys chose to step down to pursue new challenges.
For Hatch Mansfield's producer and customer base across the UK on- and off-trade, the change consolidates leadership of the portfolio under a single chief executive. Pepper's CV spans import, distribution and luxury brand ownership, giving suppliers a leader who has sat on both sides of the supplier-importer relationship.
What did the outgoing CEO say?
McGrath, who founded the business, said the importer "appointed Jon after a thorough search of the market and could not be more thrilled with our decision".
He added: "Jon understands the importance of the relationships with our producers and customers, and the team and culture that have shaped Hatch Mansfield. The board and I are confident that Jon's extensive experience and strategic expertise, as well as his sense of humour, make him the perfect fit to lead Hatch into a new era."
How has Pepper responded?
Pepper said he is "delighted to be joining Hatch Mansfield", adding: "The reputation of Hatch, its exceptional portfolio and strong culture precede it."
His remarks signal continuity: no portfolio overhaul or structural change was announced alongside the appointment. The messaging from both sides centres on preserving producer relationships and internal culture rather than repositioning the business.
What happens next?
Pepper takes the CEO seat next month, with McGrath moving to chairman at the same time. Operators and buyers dealing with Hatch Mansfield should expect the combined CEO/MD structure to take effect immediately, and the trade will watch whether Pepper uses his luxury-division experience at Stoli's Tenute del Mondo to steer the importer's premium portfolio strategy in the months ahead.
